Chinese artist Xia Xiaowan employs multiple layers of tinted glass and colorful pencils and transforms 2D paintings into 3D. He calls his work “spatial paintings”. His spatial paintings appear almost holographic. As one walks around the installation, the image changes along each shift of perspective, blurring the line between painting and sculpture. This way he maintains the hand-made qualities of the painting by combing material, technology and painting while adding elements of installation and sculptural art.
